2013 AAS Winner. Typically, you would purchase bulbs to produce these majestic plants, but with this variety you will find yourself easily and economically growing blooming canna plants in only 11 to 12 weeks. South Pacific Scarlet is more floriferous than most cannas, boasting 6 to 7 stems per plant topped with 4 by 4 inch, scarlet, orchid-like blooms. Plants grow 4 to 5 feet tall and 12 to 18 inches wide, (a little shorter if grown in containers and cold-climate areas), their stems lined with large, paddle-shaped, deep green leaves. They thrive in a full sun location in garden beds, borders and containers, blooming early and steadily all summer, even withstanding a light frost in fall. Like other cannas, they tolerate wet conditions, making them useful as a pond border or in other moisture-laden areas. In the fall, areas colder than zone 7 can dig up the rhizomes that have developed in the soil and store them in peat moss in a cool, dark, protected location for replanting the next season. If grown in pots, leave them in the pots overwinter and store them in a location that doesn't freeze. In warmer zone 7 to 10 locations, they can be left in the ground and covered with mulch for the winter.
